President-elect John Dramani Mahama has dismissed claims that he plans to terminate the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, a key initiative in Ghana’s education system. Addressing the allegations during an interview with VOA, Mahama clarified that these claims were baseless and politically motivated.
According to the president-elect, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) propagated these claims ahead of the election to sway voters, but the tactic ultimately failed. Instead of abolishing the policy, Mahama has pledged to enhance it significantly, ensuring its implementation is more effective and beneficial under his administration.
I have no intention of terminating the Free SHS policy. My focus is on improving it to address the gaps and challenges left by the previous administration, Mahama assured.
Mahama emphasized his commitment to strengthening basic education, which he believes has been neglected due to the excessive focus on secondary education. He noted that a robust foundation at the basic education level is critical to the overall success of the Free SHS policy and the broader educational framework in Ghana.
There is too much emphasis on secondary education, and basic education has been left behind, Mahama observed. Issues such as the lack of furniture in schools are some of the challenges that need urgent attention. I will ensure that these problems are addressed so every child has access to quality education from the ground up.
Mahama also outlined his vision for creating a more inclusive and efficient Free SHS program. He highlighted the need for a systematic approach to addressing the infrastructure, logistical, and operational challenges that have hindered its full potential.
Under his leadership, Mahama intends to build a stronger educational system by prioritizing investments in teaching materials, facilities, and programs that empower both students and educators. By tackling the root causes of inefficiencies, he aims to provide a well-rounded educational experience that benefits all students.
The president-elect’s commitment to education reform reflects his broader vision for social and economic development in Ghana. With an improved Free SHS policy and a renewed focus on basic education, Mahama envisions a future where every Ghanaian child has equal opportunities to succeed.
